One of the most fun things about exploring a new area is venturing off into places you’ve never been before. Many in our Jeep group were familiar with the local trails surrounding Red River, N.M. None, however, had ever ventured onto a little trail to which a local pointed us, the mile or so forest road to Middlefork Lake.
A hiking trail picks up where the short forest road leaves off, taking visitors the rest of the way — four miles, we’re told — to Middlefork Lake. After parking the Jeeps, we started down the trail, but a looming thunderstorm swayed us against completing the hike. I look forward to checking out the lakeside view on a future trip.
